Some colonial governments began to regulate lotteries, and in 1844, ten states banned them. By the 1840s, there were approximately 200 lotteries in the colonial United States.<\/p>\n
In the United States, the first modern government-run lottery was established in 1934 in Puerto Rico. Since then, several other US states have followed suit.<\/p>\n
